Nike Mercurial CR7 RARE GOLD Celebrates Ronaldo’s Latest Ballon d’Or

The crowning achievement in what’s been another historic season for Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese forward was awarded with his second consecutive Ballon d’Or today, presented by FIFA to the world’s top player from the last year. To celebrate that accomplishment, the Swoosh has created the Nike Mercurial CR7 Rare Gold, designed specifically for Ronaldo.

Gold predominates over the upper, a nod to the color that is earned by success — the Ballon d’Or, of course, is gold. That fades, in a sort of burnished effect, to black through the heel and collar. And then the design becomes truly ornate.

The CR7 logo on the boot’s medial side boasts an unheard of special effect — micro-diamonds were applied by hand to the logo, a tribute to Ronaldo’s work ethic. Micro-diamonds, you see, are chipped off of larger stones as craftsmen refine the primary diamond, meaning the micro-diamond’s existence is evidence of a work in progress. Here, they adorn the logos to reflect a commitment by Ronaldo to continue improving.

Quite literally one of the most eye-catching boots of all time, the Nike Mercurial CR7 Rare Gold unfortunately bears bad news, too. It was created exclusively for Ronaldo, and will not get a public release. Still, look for it on pitch this week, on the feet of Cristiano himself.
